Behind the scenes

Among the challenges of the job that feeds the mortgage and the cats that demand the love, I have two aspects of my weirdo brain that make my writing unique…I have aphantasia and ADD. (Honestly, looking back now, it was probably ADHD, but I was told that most of us outgrow the ‘hyper’ part. I think I just hide it well these days.) Aphantasia means, at least while I’m awake, I can’t picture anything in my mind…but I think in words. Back in Ye Olden Tymes, when many sci-fi or fantasy movies came out, novels that followed the movie almost exactly also came out. These novelizations became my cinema rewind button in those pre-driver’s license days, letting me revisit worlds I’d glimpsed only once on the big screen. These also taught me how to describe the world in words. This translates into my writing, though thankfully I don’t describe everything, but only what draws my attention/what I want to draw my readers attention to. And, as a bibliophile who is revamping older works, I kinda get stuck reading the story again. Oops. Discipline is hard sometimes.
